Indexed searches displaying incorrect locations after moving files

I have an old External HDD connected through USB I'm trying to organize (used to be my main HDD). I decided to let the drive Index over night so my searches would go quicker. However, I noticed that after moving several of the files to a different folder the searches are now displaying the original folder locations and have not updated to reflect the file moves.

My question is: How long does it take for Windows Indexer to realize a file has been move on a HDD connected via USB? I waited over night and searches are still returning the incorrect locations.

I decided to remove the HDD from the Index list, and suffer the slower searches. As I suspected, the file locations are now correctly reflecting where they actually are, but I would really like to utilize Indexed searches as they are much faster.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello Mtrap13, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It can sometimes take a while before the index automatically updates itself. If you like, you can manually rebuild the index to force it to update now. :)

Thank you Brink. The only problem with this solution is that it takes a very long time to rebuild the index which defeats the point of wanting a quicker search method. Does the Index need to be rebuilt fully for every file move, or is the Index updated dynamically? I would think it odd to have to rebuild the entire Index when moving one file...

    Unfortunately, it's not dynamic.

If you like, you can choose to not use the index. This way you will have accurate searches all the time. The only downside is that the search may take a little bit longer than with using the index.
