What is Trustedinstaller.exe?

Sometimes I see exessive hard disk activity, and when i check Task Manager I find a process called TrustedInstaller.exe. I've heard it has something to do with Windows Update, but it's not installing or downloading any updates (I check this in Control Panel). It probably just is some new crap that Windows 7 has, but does anyone have any explanations to what it does and why it's there? And has anyone else ssen this in Task Manager?

Thank you!

I have the same problem. How so I stop TrustedInstaller from hogging about 25% of my CPU? (Win7 x64)
And how can I tell if it has been taken over by a virus?

Who is 'TrustedInstaller'??
I installed an old SATA hard drive in my computer...it used to be my system main drive, and it still has the old Windows and Program Files folders on it. I'd like to delete these folders/files to reclaim the space, but when I try, it tells me I need permission from 'TrustedInstaller' to do so. ...

So I followed this tutorial and I completed every step and it all worked, just like the tutorial said. But when I tried to remove some files from my Windows folder, it still kept moaning about TrustedInstaller and not being Admin and all. I am the Admin and there's only one user on this laptop,...
