Windows 7: What is Trustedinstaller.exe?

Sometimes I see exessive hard disk activity, and when i check Task Manager I find a process called TrustedInstaller.exe. I've heard it has something to do with Windows Update, but it's not installing or downloading any updates (I check this in Control Panel). It probably just is some new crap that Windows 7 has, but does anyone have any explanations to what it does and why it's there? And has anyone else ssen this in Task Manager?

TrustedInstaller.exe -it is process of Windows Modules Installer service

If this service is disabled , Missing or corrupted it cause

-unable install updates -errror 80070424 is returned
-unable to run SFC tool -then is returned error:
"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Hmmm.... Strange. The time it showed up was not the time it was scheduled to check for updates.

is it normal for it to request multiple installations? even after I have allowed it to install, days later I get another request to install it.

I have the same problem. How so I stop TrustedInstaller from hogging about 25% of my CPU? (Windows 7 x64)
And how can I tell if it has been taken over by a virus?
