It says here that you should cancel out of the hard drive test and do a Custom test of the Hard drive to get a more precise reading: Error code: 2000-0146 - Disk Drives (HDD, CD/DVD, Blu-ray) Forum - Disk Drives - Dell Community

But first I would back up any data because the disk may well be failing.

You can always confirm a hard drives condition by running it's maker's hard drive diagnostics, in this case a WD drive you would use WD Diagnostics for Flash Stick. In some cases the manufacturer's tool can repair the hard drive, but you should replace it anyway because it is not to be trusted.

I understand the timing is bad but this is not something that's negotiable. If anything we are saying is not clear then you should ask back specific questions instead of insulting us by saying we are talking Chinese. These instructions cannot be made any simpler.

I am not insulting you and I greatly appreciate your help it just doesn't make sense to me. Ill do a chstom hard drive test and get back to you. I have no data on the hard disks so no need to backup anyways

Then why don't you ask any questions about what you don't understand? If you're a student you should realize how this works.

Let us know the results of the hard drive tests.

The best upgrade you can give your PC is an SSD, which are lightning fast - even faster than buying a new high end PC without one.

Google your model PC + replace hard drive with SSD and there should be videos to watch.

How do i get a custom hard drive test from here? http://i61.tinypic.com/14cr0qd.jpg
Sorry for having to ask.

May i also ask why the hard drive can load windows and not be able to deal with installing drivers?

I also posted on dell and they said i need to replace my hard drive so is that the only option? Or can it be fixed by running some tests

Did you tick the box for thorough test at bottom and click Run Tests?

I have repeated several times the hard drive tests you'd run to confirm the hard drive condition.

But the Dell test should be enough to replace the hard drive if it fails. The other are just to confirm, like a second opinion from the actual hard drive manufacturer.

The Win7 disk has all drivers in it except a few that are delivered and updated via Windows Update after install. This is explained at length in sequential steps in Clean Reinstall Windows 7

I'd opt for the regular chk dsk to save time and either rule in or out the drive as being the problem. If it finds errors it can't fix, the drive needs to be replaced... if it doesn't find any errors, the drive isn't the problem. JMO.
If an HDD is suffering from bad sectors it is not long for this world.

My Check Disk experience is different from yours.
I've found regular Check Disk to be mostly useless.

One of my 2 TB HDDs became dodgy this time last year, so I copied as much data as I could off of it.
I found that regular Check Disk said nothing useful about my dodgy HDD.
I don't even think it reported any bad sectors and it reported that the file system was OK (which it wasn't).

So I ran Check Disk with the repair option selected.
It found a bunch of bad sectors, attempted repairs and afterwards I was able to copy extra data off of the HDD.

It took a lot of time though.
I agree chkdsk isn't the best which is why my first suggestion was a disk utility. In this specific case though the problems described were extreme enough that imo even chk dsk would have likely found something if it were disk-related (process of elimination). Plus he said he just reinstalled factory so there was no data to be saved by going the long route. But yes... if data is present having it check for bad sectors might get you an extra boot to grab stuff before it completely wanks out. Glad in your case you were able to make the save you needed!
