Random freezing on Windows 7

Hi.
As the title suggests, my laptop seems to freeze out of nothing. Most of the time, it's when Chrome totally eats up tons of my RAM and when I'm on my AMD graphics card (I have switchable graphics).

The only fix I have is to force shut my laptop, by holding down the power button. And I hate doing that.
Could you also list the ill-effects of doing so?

Thanks for the help!

Dump Chrome, try another browser like Firefox, Bluemoon or Waterfox.

Windows 7/8.1/10 sucks on laptops. Somehow, they're OK to excellent on desktops, just not on lappies.

The only reason I'm still on XP (mostly) is to avoid random freeze and screen scrambling. Plus, XP is like a speed demon compared to 7+...

Thank you!
Is there any way to even diagnose the cause?

Yes, work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Try using the built-in IE to compare. Chrome is not by any means the best browser, and any google program you have installed or signed into is relentless spyware building a profile and pasting ads everywhere you go.

More about that in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 which compiles the perfect Win7 install and has been used by 1.4 million consumers without a single complaint. If you still have the Lenovo Factory install then I'd strongly consider replacing it with the best install possible, or at least read through it to adapt the tools and methods which work best. Until then you can improve performance following Clean Up Factory Bloatware

Because you said:

and because Chrome is known to cause significant problems sometimes.

Yes, there could be other problems but you should try things one at a time so you know when something you do makes a difference.

Darn Microsoft must of lost my address because I didn't get my check.

XP in it's day was a great operating system. I used it for years.

Now it's time to put it to rest and move on to better.

The biggest problem many users have with Windows 7 when they first try it; is they try to do things like we all did with XP.
Forget those XP methods. There gone.
Just spend a little time to learn Windows 7 and be happy.

If one still wants to use XP go for it. We don't care. It's not are computer.

Does anybody find it strange that on a Windows 7 forum their are a lot of members that like Windows 7. I figure that would be the normal to expect.
