Unable to get PC to sleep after screen saver has kicked in

Perhaps I'm trying to do something that is not supported but if it is I can't seem to get it to work.

What I want to do is to have my screen saver kick in after my selected delay time and then, after a prescribed time to have the PC go to sleep. For instance, the screen saver kicks in after 15 minutes. I have set the power setting to put the PC to sleep after an hour but it never does...it appears that once the screen saver is running it prevents any power settings from working.

Is there a simple way to achieve what I'm trying to do or is that not possible?

As always any feedback is appreciated.

Here is a tutorial by Brink you can work through:
Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

I use sleep and hibernate without issues.
I don't use screen saver.
I have my systems set to turn off the monitor 5 minutes before auto sleep or hibernate kicks in.

With modern LCD's i don't know of a real need to use screen saver.
They don't get burn-in like the old CRT's.

Thanks DavidE...I agree a screen saver is of no real use with the flat screens but I just happen to like this particular saver...I'll probably wind up just letting it run and put it to sleep manually.

I changed my settings to use screen saver (and not turn off the monitor) before auto sleep/hibernate.
My auto sleep/hibernate still works with these changes.

So, auto sleep works for me even when i use screen saver, and don't auto turn off the monitor.
I know this doesn't help solve your problem, i just see it works "correctly" for me if i use screen saver or turn off the monitor.

Sorry i can't duplicate your problem and offer better help

If i had a your problem, i'd start with a System File Check:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I haven't had any issues with the Screen Saver preventing Sleep from functioning (with my earlier W7 installs).

I have Sleep disabled in my current install (i.e. I manually put it to Sleep).

Thanks folks. I'm actually using a screen saver from NVIDIA which is sort of a demonstration what my graphics card is capable of...kinda pleasing to the eye. After reading DavidE's comment I selected one of the standard screen savers and it indeed works as expected so there must be a mismatch between how the NVIDIA card interfaces (if at all) with the power settings function. So, since I want to continue to use NVIDIA's I will just put it to sleep manually...I do that mostly anyway but the fact it didn't want to work the way I thought it should was gnawing at me...I hate to not understand something like that.
