Computer Won't Reboot or Shut Down.

Hey guys,

Got an old Dell Vostro 1000 laptop here, I'm "fixing up" to be a computer here at work for postage printing only. Nothing to do with my question, but thought I'd throw it out there. It's running Windows XP, and I'm having an issue with it. When I go to Start>Shut Down, and select Restart or Shut Down from the menu, it just sits there, and does nothing. The only thing it will do is Hibernate. Any thoughts on why it won't shut down or restart?

It's not a clean install, it was a really old intern computer, that we found in a cupboard one day. It's got a AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 Processor, 2 GB RAM, all the Windows Updates are installed, there is currently no anti-virus installed(as I have yet to get to that point).

While I remember Windows 7's CTL-PNL/Power options include finetuning the power button and the Start/Shutdown/thingies to the right, I cannot remember if Windows XP's CTL-PNL has power options. If so, check power options.

Can you force it to Shutdown by holding Power Button? Then reboot and see if the problem persists.

You can always use Hibernate in place of Shutdown but it needs to be able to reboot, although I guess you could force shutdown to accomplish that although it is risky as I recall in XP. But what's to lose? It's a dead OS anyway.

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command, install Panda Cloud AV run a full scan, then Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner.

Refresh the boot files by booting into XP disk Repair choice to run bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /fixmbr.

Thanks for the help guys. I found out I couldn't use it for what I wanted to use it for anyways so it's going to be recycled. I looked in the power options to no avail, ran an sfc /scannow to no avail, and still never shut down or restarted.

Certain computer games shut down my computer
First off, I'd like to say that this isn't an overheating issue, because I am able to play Computer intensive games (like Star Craft II) for 4+ hours with no problems, but I can't play certain games for longer than 15-20 minutes. So far it has only happened to me with 3 games: 1. Halo Combat...
