Making space in Windows 7

Ignore my joke name, have long ago upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 which I love.

Am approaching the limit of my C drive and encountering system instability and can't seem to make enough space. About a month ago I moved videos, audios and photos to my almost-empty E drive which freed a lot of space on C. But since then the space has been filled again even though I haven't installed new programs or stored any video/audio/photo, making me wonder if something I'm unaware of is creating the problem, such as some kind of backing up that I'm unaware of, especially as there were at least two crashes. I also ran a virus check on AVG which brings up nothing.

So I installed and ran Wiztree which identifies fat files and folders, which might indicate where I can delete. The biggest file at 23.4 GB is of course Windows - is there anything in that file I can safely delete?

You say you ran AVG.

Your specs say you have Avast.

Which do you have and which did you run?

Avast is known to have a bug that eats up space, related to System Restore points.

1. a screenshot of your disk management would help

2. if your C partition was filled without your interaction, it could be a growth of the shadowstorage. Check that in elevated command prompt with this command:

vssadmin list shadowstorage.

whs, thanks to your advice, I just checked my shadow copy storage -- 32GB. How do I set limits, ie maximum level? I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

This is the command with which you set the size of the shadowstorage on C. The 20GB is just an example. You can chose any size but not less than 350MB. Be aware that a restore point can be between 500MBs and 1GB.

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=20GB

Roland:

Type "system restore" into start button search box.

Choose "create a restore point", then "configure" button.

Move the slider where you want it.

I see you have Avast, so you may have the bug that is interfering with the allotted space, over-riding your slider setting.

So, you did NOT see a list of available choices like below when you typed "system restore" into the search box?

As mentioned, if you are using Avast, it may well be over-riding your settings and interfering with your intent on System Restore.

Ahhh, I did it wrong earlier, under the 1st box that read System Restore, in the 2nd box, there was: create a restore point; clicked on it, gave me the box you wanted to have -- checked the configuration: earlier batchfile did it right: 20GB.
