'Change Mouse Pointers' link does not work

will the repair install fix system links that do not worK? cursor choices show up in Cursors file in Windows. Problem is after installing windows 7 Professional the link to the mouse pointers does not work and if you go to mouse properties they are not there just the mouse driver details. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I did the RC of windows 7 to see if I would like it...the mouse options was not available in the RC thought it would get fixed in final release. As instructed when received my upgrade after final release went back to Vista home premium, upgraded to 7 home premium (had to buy it, had ordered and recieved 7 pro) then upgraded to the 7 pro. still no mouse pointer options to change the pointer. The pointers are in the Cursors folder in Window, but when I click on 'Change Mouse pointers' nothing happens. In the control panel when I click on the mouse icon nothing happens. I am using a usb mouse on my laptop but this feature does not work with the touchpad either. Worked just fine in vista, any suggestions

Hello Tgcws, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would recommend to do a clean install with your upgrade Windows 7 instead of upgrading from the RC version of Windows 7. This may be the root of your problem.

If you like, you can try a repair install to see if you may get lucky. If not you may need to do a clean install.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I did not upgrade from RC I took my system back to factory Vista, re installed printer and software update anti-virus program getting ready for 7 updated all drivers to be ready for 7. This problem was present with the RC ultimate installed over vista. It repeated when I upgrade from vista to 7 home premium then to 7 pro as instrucked. So you are telling me that clean install is only way this can be fixed even though I did it correctly from the beginning?

Doing a upgrade instead of a clean install can sometimes have issues, especially when you upgrade twice like that.

Since it a basic feature on Windows 7 and not just a driver issue, then I'm afraid I see no other option.

Thanks, I was afraid that may be your answer. I was planning on upgrading my desktop this same way..may rethink that.

One more thing, I am assuming that I will have to re install all my drivers for the hp dv7-1279wm as well, is this right?

Yes, unfortunately a clean install will require installing everything from scratch again.

Afterward you finish, you may want to create a system image backup. This way if you should ever need to do a clean install again, you can just restore this image backup instead and have everything ready to go again in about 15 minutes.

So the clean install is what I need other than the custom install? I am sorry I am being do tedious, just want to make sure what I need to do. I knew I should have saved the updated drivers instead of just installing them

Sorry, yes you sure can do either a clean or custom install. The custom install will place your files from the current OS into the C:\Windows.old folder in the new installation so that you can copy any files back that you may want.

After making sure I had all of the latest drivers saved and all info backed up, decided to try the repair upgrade, first. It worked...the link for changing mouse pointer and settings is now operational.
All is well and did not have to do a clean install.
    I am a happy camper
