Computer Has Dementia or ...

... perhaps an update is the culprit or other? I've had this well-performing machine since 2009 and running 24/7 about 80% of those years. In the last few months I have been getting a right-side taskbar "This Device Can Perform Faster" notification area usb-related pop-up. However, I have not plugged in any devices! It has been happening regularly soon after a start-up, re-start or wake from hibernate. Did all this Windows 10 update activity cause this? It is not really a problem, just an annoyance. Anybody else experiencing this or has a resolution?

-thx

The message…it pops up when you put in an older USB drive and tells you it can perform faster. Click on the balloon message to see a list of available USB 2.0 ports.

At the bottom of the This Device Can Perform Faster window, uncheck the box Tell me if my device can perform faster then close the window.

I did that the first time it appeared. Sorry for not saying this in the op.

Look in device manager for any other usb devices - card readers, webcams, maybe even the trackball. Update pertinent drivers. In DM check for view/show hidden devices and uninstall any usb "ghosts" no longer present.

I'm not sure if it's visually possible to tell a ghost from a hidden device, but generally ghosted and/or hidden devices show up just a bit fainter. You would have to know that the device is past history, otherwise you could delete needed drivers (usually not the end of the world, but can be a pain). The simplest way to do it if that is not practical, is to use ghostbuster.
