Once booted up, everything takes forever to open/load/run, etc

Strange problem that started happening yesterday. All of a sudden everything takes forever to open or run once I boot up.

PC boots normally, everything looks great, but double clicking an icon or right clicking the desktop for a menu, or even trying to open the start menu takes upwards of 10-15 minutes to complete. This machine has been running perfectly up to this point, including yesterday. The only thing I did that was out of the norm yesterday was to try IE to download a file from a friends box account, which failed anyways. This was the first time in YEARS that I opened IE on this machine.

I have tried running malware bytes, spy bot, registry mechanic all with positive results. I opened IE and reset internet options so that it would disable all toolbars, I booted up with avast disabled. When I boot into safe mode, things seem to be ok although I haven't tried to fire up a program but the desktop functions normally. I tried running windows updates and while it took quite some time, it finally told me that I was up to date.

I'm not sure what else to try, so any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Chris
