The thread title states windows support online
When i search for windows support online, i can get to the link/page below.

Is this where you are seeing Windows XP rather than Windows 7 ?
For me this page shows my current OS is Windows 7, and that is correct for me.

Windows Support online misidentifies my operating system

Here is what I was talking about. Windows Support - yesterday before I changed the user agent string to reflect Windows 7, it said I had XP (which is no longer supported). Today it says I have no Windows OS, so maybe I didn't do that part right. I just can't figure out what Windows Support is looking at to get that info.

The reason it thinks it's a Dell vs. the HP Pavilion that it is is because the software I purchased for Windows 7 Pro says it's a reinstallation DVD for a Dell computer.

Well that's a problem
A Dell recovery disk can only be used on a Dell computer so yes you should inquire about a refund for it asap
You need a recovery disk for a h-p if you have a h-p mother board.

Or just buy a oem/ system builders copy from Newegg/....

Hmmm... Well, I don't think that explains why Windows Support now thinks I have no Windows OS but previously thought I had Windows XP before I added a new string value for the user agent.

Again, what is Windows Support looking at to tell it what OS I have? My system knows it is Windows 7. Firefox knows it is Windows 7. Why doesn't Windows Support know it is Windows 7? Where is it looking that I need to edit?

Where did you get the product key?

This part doesn't fit HP or Dell,

Code:
Windows Product ID: 00371-OEM-9321497-95967
This part shows that you are not using the system license made for that computer,

Code:
OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no SLIC table
If you can clear that up that should get the dogs off you.

The product key was on a sticker that came with the disk. Microsoft says it's a valid license. Are they wrong?

Here is what my user agent page says.

Thanks all for the help. I reviewed some material and realized there was information missing from the user agent string I put into about:config. I put in all the info and Microsoft Support now recognizes that I have Windows 7. Will have to wait and see if having that straightened up helps my computer run better. It's always good when you can solve a problem and learn some new stuff at the same time. Thanks again.

Here are three sites I used.
To figure out how to override my user agent: How to Change Your Browser?s User Agent Without Installing Any Extensions
To figure out what the user agent string value should be for Windows 7 (see Platform Tokens section): https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...=vs.85%29.aspx
To figure out what my whole user agent string should be (you can copy and paste the string you want, but you still have to edit the "x" and "y" values): https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/...ring_reference
I also went to Control Panel>System>Edit the system environment variables and edited the entry for OS to show the value for Windows 7 (Windows NT 6.1).
Hope that is what you were asking for.
