Did you change both of these in Control Panel -> Power Options?
  • Choose when to turn off the display
  • Change when the computer sleeps

Using Windows Backup is not a solid plan. It is not reliable. Many people her use Macrium Reflect. Macrium Reflect Free It is a free imaging program and has never failed me. Give it a try instead of Windows Backup.

Just be aware that you must have a separate HD to backup your files. It does no good to backup on the same disk that your Windows are on.
