Unable to open any folder, explorer.exe continuously crashes

    Hi all,

So my computer is almost unuseable right now.

When I start my computer, afterputting in my password, it logs on slowly. Folders do not open and nothing open on the run prompt. Computer just freezes.

However other program open, included Google chrome, malwarebytes, etc. Ccleaner doeas have an error, it restarts but then works normally.

I was thinking windows could be corrupted. I wanted to do a repair install, but since explorer.exe doesnt function, the autoplay feature never loads either. I have a bootable USB drive with windows 7. I dont know how to get to the set up file without opening a folder.

I was reading that the repair can't be done on safemode.

I also wanted to rule out user profile corruption. I got a profile thing briefly on there but that went away. I did this. How to fix a corrupt user profile in Windows - How-To - PC Advisor With the intention of opening another account but i got error 0xc0000006.

I tried running sfc \scannow in safemode but that caused the explorer.exe restart and it never opens. When I restarted my computer, i did safe mode with command prompt. That got it to run but its been stuck at 19% for a long time now. It then failed, said could not perform the requested operation. I tried verify only and that has gotten past 19% I turned off the WiFi when it first started acting up and don't have the computer connected to wiresethernet at the moment. Don't know if this matters. The verifyonly gave me this reading. Windows resource protection found integrity violations. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log For example C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

I don't want to do a clean install, i have a few files I did not back up recently. Any suggestions would be great.

    explorer.exe problem

I suggest you try an alternative program and see if it functions OK.
Here's a good free one you can download.

    News - nomad.en

At least you should be able to save the files you wanted to.

I have seen this tutorial, the issue I have is actually opening it. I'm wondering if I can open it through 7-zip. The auto-run feature requires explorer.exe so the auto-play never shows the prompt of what to do with the usb

    Exactly what can't you open?
Many things can be opened without auto play just by right ticking on them and select Open.

I personally don't use auto play because it is a security risk.

What doesn't open are folders and right clicking also doesn't work, they just freeze the computer. In safe mode the cause explorer.exe to crash and restart. I also can't right click the deaktop or the taskbar. I also noticed that this is happening to all microsoft office products on my computer. Word, excel, outlook, they all fail to open but they don't freeze the computer. They also fail to open in safe mode. I ran malwarebytes and norton security suite and both came empty to any malware or viruses. I ran custom scans of the entire harddrive for both things. I can also update both programs. CCleaner has an error as soon as I open it but once I restart it, it is able to open and run. So what I want to know is how do I get to the setup.exe file on the flash drive without opening the folder. I know I can use the usb as a bootable usb install. Additionally, I tried signing up and doing the windows 10 upgrade from the taskbar and that crashes the computer. I dont think it even starts the download. I figure I must resolve this to upgrade to windows 10. I know that it would be easier to just wipe everything and start over but I'd prefer not to do this.

I don't know if your system will allow you to do it but maybe a new User Account will help.

Who is the administrator of this computer?

Are you able to complete sfc /scannow?

Here is a tutorial by Brink that can guide you.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If you can complete this tutorial by Brink and post here.
I could also give some usable information.
