I am using two Windows7 machines ... one is an OEM (Lenovo laptop, Win Pro7) and the other is a custom build desktop Win7 Ultimate. I'm not seeing any of this 'forcing/downloading/nag' stuff that others are reporting. Why is that?

I have Windows update set to notify me when new updates are available, but not to download automatically.
I don`t have any Windows 10 issues either Jacee, never did

No problems here either. :) I've set Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update in Group Policy.
Windows Update set to check but let me choose.

Two of the W7 computers that I support only recently (11 Oct) had those registry settings added.

    They...
    ...are on 24/7
    ...are not in a domain
    ...had the $Windows.~BT folder (6GB)
...had the GWX offer in the notification area
...had the "give me recommended updates..." checked
...had (and still have) auto-install updates selected
    ...did not automatically install W10.

    Indianatone,
Please remind me; when did this forced change to W10 happen for you?
Patch Tuesday in October 2015 about 10 PM as I was going to bed. As I had not had time that day to look into the updates I was going to shut the PC's down and discovered my options were to install Windows 10. My settings were indeed changed as I used to choose what to download. All the settings were indeed over ridden by M$ and they said as much and they are going to do it again next year.

See my post 78 for full details:

Re: Patching tuesday - the new peril

"KB3083710 - still no information about what this does, but it is important they tell me."
Microsoft - KB3083710 improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
I believe KB3083710 changes your update settings from check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them to install updates automatically. When KB 3083710 is installed it automatically installs KB 2952664 when you shut down

And Bingo Windows 10 another happy customer brought to by Microsoft. *SARCASM*

Thanks for the info. I have KB3083710 installed. My WU settings held. I sure wish we knew precisely what triggered yours (and others) experience.

The Group Policy seems to stick, however I've seen some users with just the registry setting have it automatically changed. Haven't noticed that with GP though.
I've been advising people to use the Group Policy (if they have the pro version installed).
As I said, if after an update my GP settings have changed, then that's it, it'll be like fighting a losing battle. WU will be switched off and I'll just install every security update on my own.
Before any backlash, I'm not advocating turning this off to anyone! I will only do this if it gets to the point they're giving me no other option. WU is becoming more of a hindrance than a benefit.

Luckily that hasn't happened yet! My settings and policies have remained intact so far.

I now fully absolutely do not trust Microsoft. My original windows update settings were just notify me. You got the yellow shield in the notification area of the taskbar when there were any updates. I would then look and download and install the updates. This setting was tampered with by Microsoft and set to download and install everything. I suppose they send a command to wake up KB3083710 which in turn changes the settings and downloads everything to enable a Windows 10 install.

Microsoft really wants people to get on the Windows 10 bandwagon, so much so that the company plans to start automatically downloading its new operating system to some users' computers next year.
That's an aggressive move from Microsoft, especially given the outcry earlier this month after the company did the same thing accidentally. Users who've gotten the download will still be able to opt out before it's installed on the device, and they can roll back the upgrade for as long as 31 days after making the switch to the new OS, so that's some consolation.

It's a particularly raw deal for people who are on metered Internet connections. Windows 8.1 users aren't in danger there, because that OS won't automatically download updates over a metered connection. But Windows 7 users will have to turn off automatic downloads of all recommended updates in order to avoid downloading multiple gigabytes worth of operating system.
