Help. Explorer window appears at start up.

I posted before regarding this problem with a different title to the thread.

I was running with Vista 32 bit on my PC and bought a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade and installed. But annoyingly the explorer window appears at each start up. I have tried re-installing several times but with no change.

Now in retrospect, all I have to do is click 'X' and it goes. But it is annoying and if anyone can help stop it appearing it would be appreciated.

Bear in mind I am pretty much a novice in computer terms and any fixes can you keep it basic.

regards and thanks

Johnston.

Hey John.

Press start, and type msconfig. This will bring up the startup menu where you can enable or disable startup services. If you look through the tabs, is there any place where it starts an explorer window? If you check "Safe Startup" on the main screen and reboot, does it still happen?

Download Autoruns and in the logon tab, if you see an explorer entry untick it. Just keep the first explorer entry. Reboot. If you are unsure post a screenshot. Just search for snip in the start menu.

Thanks Lordbob, Mrsdoyle and Frostbourne.

Msconfig gives no indication of explorer and when rebooting in safe mode the explorer window still appears.

There isn't a 'startup' folder in the programs menu but after a search the only entry is 'One Note'.

Tried the autoruns and unchecked 'explorer' in the logon tab. After a reboot the explorer window still appears.

Do a system scan only with Hijack this

Trend Micro HijackThis - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

if you find this in the list> F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\WINDOWS\"
tick the box next to this item only and click FIX CHECKED button then reboot. Hopefully it will be gone. This key specifies what program should be launched right after a user logs into Windows.
That is why i asked you what folder it was opening in, i am presuming it is opening in C:WINDOWS.

Mrs Doyle, the only item resembling that is

F2-REG:system.ini:Userinit=C:\Windows\system32\user.init-exe,C:\Windows\system32\e3ShellStart.exe.

shall I click 'Fix Checked'?.

Hi e3SHELLSTART.exe is not known to me. I have had a good look around and cant find any reference to it on the internet. So my gut feeling is that this is not required for the running of the system so i personally would check the box but make sure you have backed up all you stuff before you do it. I am using Windows 7 X86 and X64 and i have searched the system32 folders and i dont see it if it makes you feel more comfortable about deleting it.
let me know how you get on.
