Startup screen doesn't give dialog box for entering password

My wife shutdown her laptop yesterday and thinks that some software (or windows) updates may have been in the process of installing when she closed the lid of the laptop. When she later went to startup she reached the usual screen with the user icon in the center and clicked on it as usual. Instead of the password dialog box appearing, the icon just disappears for 5 seconds and then re-appears. I've tried the following with no change in that pattern:
1. Restart / shutdown
2. startup in safe mode
3. startup in safe mode with networking
4. pressing f8 at startup and selecting "starting with last known good configuration (Advanced)" [I found that suggestion in a separate forum discussion]
5. pressing enter at startup when the Fujitsu logo is showing, and then running the "Diagnostic program" - I think this is a hardware diagnostic program that came with the laptop. It found no hardware faults

I am far from an expert at these things, and the laptop contains a lot of precious stuff that I don't want to screw up. I can take it to a store but wanted to check on this forum to see if there are any other low-risk things I can try. Any help gratefully received!

Do you have a USB stick that can boot in the Laptop? If you have that and an external drive and the Laptop has another USB port you may be able to at least copy the HD contents to the external before doing more experiments.

Also there may be a way to boot from USB then delete the pending updates. I don't know how that is done but with all the hassles caused by updates somebody must have figured out a way.

Edit: by the way do you have restore points on the Laptop? You may be able to boot from USB to a command line and do a restore from there.

Thanks for the response MilesAhead. My wife ended up taking the laptop to a repair place yesterday and they couldn't find a way to get into it, but they did at least pull the hard drive out and it was intact. The store said they could do a bunch of things (eg. wiping and reinstalling the OS and reloading everything from scratch) but the cost of that isn't justified for an old laptop that was due to be replaced soon anyway. So, we're off to buy a new one today, and we'll get the stuff transferred from the old hard drive to the new laptop.
