a. When a desktop PC is set to go "to sleep" after so many minutes of inactivity,
is the HD then totally stopped ?
b. Any disadvantage to "always" leaving PC On, but just setting the sleep mode for, e.g.,
20 minutes or so ? Is this what most folks do ?

a. In sleep mode only RAM and a few critical devices are receiving power. All others, including the hard drive, are powered down.
b. The main advantage of sleep mode is lower power consumption. It is also said that this will prolong the computers life. That has been debated for years with no end in sight.
I don't believe sleep mode is used much in desktops. Most people shut the computer down when it will not be used for some time. That times varies quite a bit.
With the speed a PC boots and shuts down I personally don't use Sleep. Really no need for it. When PC's boot in 30 to 40 sec. and shut down in 5 sec. What is the need for Sleep. Using a hard drive those times will be more.
If power consumption is the question; their is not a lot of power consumption when the PC is OFF.
Both vary too much to quote any meaningful numbers. I wouldn't try.What is the power consumption of a typical desktop Windows computer (please say whether the monitor is or is not included):
