Overlay icons not working

Greetings,

I tried asking this in Microsoft Answers without a response.

Mozy is supposed to be displaying small icons over the lower-left of a file icon, which shows the backup status, but it's not working. It looks like too many programs are trying to create icon overlays. I think they are writing to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

The two subkeys I'm trying to identify are:

key : EnhancedStorageShell
data: {D9144DCD-E998-4ECA-AB6A-DCD83CCBA16D}

key : SharingPrivate
data: {08244EE6-92F0-47f2-9FC9-929BAA2E7235}

How can I find out which programs created these keys?

Thanks,
Shane.

Those two subkeys are there by default in a fresh install of W7.

If you only add Mozy to the mix, that area of the registry should look like this:

Windows limits the number of icon overlays. Do you happen to have Dropbox too?

Microsoft says that the total limit is 15, but that some are reserved for the system. If the two I asked about are for the system, then there might be 13 left.

I deleted three Norton subkeys, so the remaining subkeys of ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers look like this:
  • AccExtIco1
  • AccExtIco2
  • AccExtIco3
  • SkyDrive1 *
  • SkyDrive2 *
  • SkyDrive3 *
  • EnhancedStorageShell *
  • mozy
  • mozy2
  • mozy3
  • SharingPrivate *
* Also appear in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellIconOverlayId entifiers

The subkeys are in alphabetical order. The first six begin with a space.

I don't have Dropbox. I have Adobe, SkyDrive, and Mozy.

It looks like the SharingPrivate subkey is used to create a padlock icon overlay. I think EnhancedStorageShell has something to do with Enhanced Storage. Basically I was wondering if they were third-party icons, but it looks like they're system icons, so I'll leave them.

Thanks,
Shane.

If you can, temporarily turn off the overlays for the other two apps. That should let you see if Mozy's overlays are working. You might also try turning off Mozy's overlays, restarting the computer and then turning Mozy's overlays back on.

I uninstalled Adobe Creative Cloud, which freed up another three slots (AccExtIco1, AccExtIco2, and AccExtIco3). The Mozy status icon overlays are working now.

Thanks,
Shane.
