Have you verified the checksum for the new media you purchased ?
Maybe there is a problem with the Win 7 install media.
If you're interested, here is a SF thread about this with links, posts, suggestions, etc.:

I have KB976902 on two systems and it causes no problems.
Maybe your problem lies elsewhere.

It smells to me that the installation disk is corrupt in some fashion.

I would suggest reading this because you chose a refurbished Windows 7.

I also wonder if the installation disk is corrupt, that's why i suggested verifying the checksum.

Some other things that make me wonder about the media

I'm sorry WHS but the update was installed on 11/20/2010 when the CD was made.
Win 7 SP1 wasn't officially released until February 2011, so is the new Win 7 media from Amazon SP1 or pre-SP1 ?
KB976902 is required to get the SP1 update, but this KB was re-published after 11/20/2010.

Maybe the new Win 7 media is an old pre-SP1 version with an old KB976902 update.

Laptop acting strange. Few things happening.
Ok so I've had this laptop since October. Occasionally when I'm on Skype with my cam I get this weird white noise type thing. My whole screen turns into like white noise, like how tv's are on the wrong channel. It's not the regular black and white dots, but there's color to it and it's lines. So...

Strange things happening on w7
I used a de-frag programme to speed up my VAIO which uses W7. it was a disaster. As a result I've had to re-load lots of stuff and an unfortunate side effect has been that when in Control Panel I can't click on lots of the links to perform actions like "create a new user profile" "find and fix...

Strange hole in security
Hi I have recently installed Windows 7 on my PC, which is used by myself and the kids. I set myself up as administrator, and the kids account as standard user. Now I am used to Windows XP (never had anything to do with Vista), where the administrators files are private, but the administrator can...
