Even if you want to try out Windows 10 in a VM don't you still need a license and activation COA for Windows 10? Also the only W10 licenses I've seen on offer here are OEM.

Yes you need a license - even in VM. I just upgraded one of my 8.1 systems.

So another question - does an OEM license get locked to a specific VM configuration or can you reuse it on specific real hardware.

Were I to stay with Windows, it would be 8.1, which I like. It was a retreat from the height of MS arrogance as seen in 8.0. W10, afaic, removes too much user control - such as which updates to install. That puts the future of your machine directly into MS's hands. I don't believe MS has become a charity of late. I think they see OSes going to freeware and they realize they need to change their revenue model to peripheral streams. And that's bad for privacy, IME. The name of the game is marketshare, and MS has been pushing W10 more than a little too hard.

But for most people, there is no longer any need to stick with Windows.

I believe it's locked to the virtual mother board

The message we are trying to get through here is, try it before you buy it.

You have at least 30 days.

The OP will see if he/she hates/likes it and no harm done to his/her windows 7 PC.

But, he/she should have been an Insider and he/she would have made that decision a long time ago

So I think the answer to his/her question is no, it is not safe.

6 months (not counting the TP) is hardly enough time.

Yeah right. I keep forgetting the 30 day rule. But that is convenient as a first test approach.

So going back to having a key to run the OS in a VM, the answer is still no, you don`t need one if you were just getting familiar with the OS.

And why would you waste a key on a VM anyway.
