Windows 7: username or password is incorrect

username or password is incorrect

Daughter's computer is set to auto login on boot.
I go to the logoff screen where it shows her user account and guest.
Click on her user account and it asks for password.
She says she has no password for her user account.
Hit enter for blank password and it tells me this is incorrect.
Ran Offline NT Password and Registry Editor and it shows the password to be blank.
If there is no password then why does it ask for one?

Thanks for the response. I had looked at that but it appears to be used to replace the old password with a new password. How will this work if there is no password and she does not want any password?

Just give it a password. Doesn't look like the old one is required. Once you can logon, open Control Panel, User Accounts and remove the password.

Another approach is to enter net user administrator /active:yes instead of using net user xxxxxxxx MyNewPassword. This enables the hidden Administrator account. Reboot and login as Administrator. Open Control Panel, User Accounts and remove the password. (or add then remove it) from the account you are having problems with.

When done, open a Elevated Command Prompt and enter net user administrator /active:no to disable it again. Also undo the files changes you made to start with.

TGhe above method is described better here: User Account Password - Change from WinRE System Repair Disc.

Worked perfectly! Thanks

On reboot, I get the incorrect password/username screen, hit enter and it goes to the list of users screen. I could log in without a password. To eliminate the incorrect password/username screen on boot, I ran netplwiz which showed no check mark in "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". I placed a check mark in the box and clicked apply, ok. I opened netplwiz again, unchecked the box, clicked apply, ok. Rebooted and the incorrect password/username screen no longer appeared.
