You are unfortunately right.

The only thing left out before we throw up our hands is to run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic/repair tool. You can also try HDSentinel Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring also.

If these do not see your drive, that is the end of the road and nothing can be done by the user. No DIY data recovery is possible. You have to seek Professional Data Recovery services.

hi jumanji.
thanks for your post.
its a Hitachi HDD and I already tried their 'Drive Fitness' software. It didn't 'see' the drive either.
so would you put any stock into trying HDSentinel?

No . It was only given as an alternative in case you did not find the manufacturer's diagnostic/repair tool.( Many smaller mfrers don't have a tool or atleast difficult to find one if it exists.)

As already said you have to give up on that HDD. No DIY possible. When you don't have the cake you can't eat it .

While I would like the files which are otherwise irreplaceable (photos etc.) or will take a long while to rework or find (spreadsheets, references etc.) I suspect I will not be able to afford or at least just the cost of a Professional Data Recovery service.

As I read this, have you ever heard of freezing a HDD to get it going just long enough to get data off and if so, is my HDD likely too far gone even for this last resort?

I have heard of this, but never had to try it myself. You have nothing left to lose, give it a try.

I froze the HDD as I had read protecting by two plastic bags and while it might be wishful thinking I think I did hear the drive spinning as it hadn't before.

I am not sure if it was or if it was, whether it will be enough to make a difference but I had discarded peppermint and now have to download it again to follow your guide which I imagine would have less impact on the HDD than using it to boot from...
