Folder View doesn't work with DVD-ROMs

I store my main files on DVD-ROMs as they don't take up much space and I prefer a format that is totally protected from erasure by Windows operations, and a lot of the time I will just insert the disc I need and run files from there.

However, the default columns in the Detail view in Explorer is far too small, and no matter what, trying to use Folder View to set the desired column widths DOES NOT WORK, presumably as the "desktop.ini" files which represent that option can't obviously be written to the disc.

Nor does Ctrl + work, neither - I find it only sets the column width for the items on screen at that moment, and any others remain cut short. And if I apply it on those longer names, the others remain the same width and the Size column becomes untidy and scattered in a few places.

Is there a default column width setting for all columns buried deep down in the Registry somewhere? I am NOT going to put my files on the HDD.

Does no-one know?

I too would prefer a different medium. The spin-up of the disc in the drive is a long delay, but there is no way for the contents to be modified or deleted, which is what I prefer.

In fact, I'm so concerned with no loss of files that I use ImgBurn to create ISOs of folder structures rather than 7-Zip, although the latter is useful for opening the ISO files, which cannot be modified or have files/folders deleted.

What I would like is software that could do that to selected folders on the HDD - is there software that can prevent changes and deletions to files and folders within a specified folder until I supply a password?

I've already tried Folder Lock Lite but when it's locked it disappears, which is no use to me.
