Long Running Script problem - Windows Defender?

I have been having problems with "long running script" interrupting browsing with long wait times and multiple IE stops/crashes.

I finally performed a clean boot, as follows:
  • msconfig
  • selective startup
  • uncheck load startup items
  • hide all MS services
  • disable all
  • restart
Browser now works fine. I am trying to track down the source of the problem. Under the Services tab of msconfig there are almost 200 items. About half of them are listed as stopped. 27 items now show "date disabled" as today's date. Is it reasonable to assume that one or more of these items is the problem?

One suspect is Windows Defender. Following a prompt from hidden icon Solve PC issues I reinstalled Windows Defender and browsing instantly slowed. Went back to msconfig and unchecked it and problem solved. Going through 27 items, one at a time or in random combinations seems like an unruly task. I am also concerned I may have disabled something important. Any thoughts?

I am running-
  • Windows 7 Pro 32bit
  • IE 11
  • McAfee antivirus

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Does your McAfee antivirus have an inbuilt Firewall ?
If so turn off Defender.
You don't need two Firewalls running this will slow you down.

Windows Defender is not a firewall in Windows 7 OS.

Using Windows Defender - Windows Help
Quote:
Windows Defender is antispyware software that's included with Windows and runs automatically when it's turned on. Using antispyware software can help protect your computer against spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
In Windows 8 and Windows 10, Microsoft calls Windows Defender an antivirus app.
