Hm. That isn’t default. It should be like your XP machine, where users are listed as icons and only passwords are required to logon. Though your current configuration is more secure, you may choose to revert to the default setting using Option One, step 2 in the tutorial linked below.

Log On with User Name and Password
Thanks but my system seems to have a bit more complexity involved. First off I need to be clear in that it only does the above said display when I "switch users". And to be even more clear I'm pretty sure I did not logoff but only "switched" users (if that matters).

When I first boot up it goes to the last user before shutdown and then it's the standard display asking only for the pswd and not the user.
I manually checked the registry and the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\dontdisplaylastusername

has a value of zero already. Is there another key that I need to look at ?

So what you’re saying is, upon Switching User you are presented with a login screen that insists both a username and password be entered, while Logging Off brings you to the ordinary user selection screen, which only prompts for a password, correct?

I’m perplexed by this inconsistency. If a registry key or group policy (which is absent in your edition of Windows: Home Premium) is causing this, I’d imagine it should affect both the ‘Switch User’ and ‘Logoff’ functions. Though I’ve done only limited testing with these settings so I might be wrong.

Please detail this separate issue in a new thread while I ponder this some more.

Meanwhile, I’m going to mark this thread as solved.

Thanks much to all you guys for the help you've given me. You've got me out of the darkness and I can see enough light now to put up the "premium" in my Home Premium edition (lol).
