Thanks to all for your advice - really appreciated.

In the end I went for what appeared to be the simplest and easiest to use solution which is Never 10. I downloaded Never 10, used it to disable the 10 upgrade, as well as using the 'remove Windows 10 files' function. Couldn't be easier, and to anyone like me who wants to rid their system of this imposition but doesn't have too much pc knowledge, I recommend it. The upgrade to 10 icon has now gone from the right side of the bottom screen bar, and I can relax knowing that my pc won't be changed to another os.

I also took Keager's suggestion and used the windows cleaner to clean my C drive. If there are any further steps I need to take, suggestions would be appreciated. I find it hard to believe that Windows have steamrollered millions of people into something that they obviously didn't want or ask for. It's only by chance that I noticed the 'upgrade' process starting that I managed to avoid it, and saved the hassle of having to change my pc back to 7.

I ran the Never10. It said it was disabled, however the next time I checked for updates the KB3035583 (Win 10) showed up again. Did not work for me.

    Hi,
Firstly these win-10 updates would not exist if you researched Recommended updates and more importantly Exclude them from being mixed up with real important updates by simply unchecking one box
Then you can simply ignore the Optional section altogether or at the very least research them first

Yes, MS keeps getting that through, I had it this morning although I have hidden it several times it always comes back as 'Important' upgrade. Oh yeah, important to whom? Certainly not me!

By the time you are sick of seeing that one, you will know the KB number by heart (even my tech-unsavvy wife knows it!). Right click, click "Hide Update" and it will not go through. Until the next time...

I don't think MS knows what to do about all the "Resistance Fighters" who have found ways of defying their underhand, sneaky, immoral attempts to load 10 onto our machines. Maybe the Black Helicopters will come for us all.

I don't need Win 7 anymore. I kept it for running an RS232C application that would not work on Win8/10. I found a USB/RS232C adapter that works on Win 10 so I no longer need Win 7 for that. However, I'll keep it as a backup for my recording studio in case there would be a problem with it in Win 10. I can fall back to Win 7 and run from there.

I'm going to disable the NIC in Win 7, since I don't really need it on line. That will kill the Win 10 update attempt.

I've tried several of the utilities that are supposed to keep Win 10, or at least the KB, from showing up. None of them work, or only work temporarily.

As far as I know KB3035583 will show up as an optional updater anyway - especially if a new version re-published. In theory "Never10" would block installation of this update if the user downloads it and attempts to install it.

KB3035583 should only attempt to auto install if the user has configured Windows Update settings to auto download and install recommended updates.

At least it worked for me when I ran "Secpod Saner" that attempted to download and install KB3035583 - detected as a missing update. "Never10" blocked installation - or at least the registry entries created by Never10 were obeyed.

To stop this annoyance, go to https://tweakhound.com/2015/11/01/re...n-windows-7-2/ and follow instructions.

After having a quick look at the last few posts, it appears that Never10 won't stop the KB3035583 update from returning. It was installed again on my pc yesterday - several days after Never10 was installed.

As long as the nagging from Windows has stopped and the icon disappeared from the bottom bar - I'm assuming that I am protected from this menace. For the time being, at least.

Thanks. I have unchecked the recommended updates box as suggested. Do I still need to do anything with the the KN3035583 update that was installed yesterday, like hide it? Or should I just leave it to Never10?

Keep hiding 3035583. It may continue to reappear in either optional or recommended updates regardless of what "preventative" applications you may have installed. You can't go to sleep on this issue.
