file association for shortcuts

I've done something unknowingly and now all my files .lnk are associated with Wordpad!
that means when I click on a shortcut i see the text of shortcut file instead of it executing.
the association in another W7 machine that works correctly reads "unknown application"
and nothing helpful shows up under "brouse" for a new program to associate.
what executes the shortcut files?? any help will be appreciated.
