    Proactive at shut down choices

    Hello,

At the shut down button is an arrow with Switch user , Log off , Lock , Restart and Sleep choices.
I am only one using this PC so no multiple users or any user accounts with passwords at boot.

Basically I want to be able to get out of a mess before I accidentally clik one of the above.

I use restart selection so no help needed there. I have never clicked any of the others and if I accidentally do , how do I get out of this situation?

    1) Switch user if clik what happens & how to get out of this situation?
    2) Log off * same question as above
    3) Lock * same question as above
    4) Sleep * same question as above

    Thanks for help

Log back in the account you just came from. If there is no password just click the icon. If there is a password you will have to enter it after clicking the icon.

    2) Log off * same question as above
    Same answer as above.

    3) Lock * same question as above
Hit any key then enter password. If you never set a password for the lock screen it will ask you to do so the first time you lock.

    4) Sleep * same question as above
    Move the mouse.

    Thanks for help

    No problemmo. :)

Thank you MilesAhead for your help. One thing isn't clear-
On # 3, " it will ask you to do so the first time you lock." I must enter a password even though I never had one, and I must remember this pass forever?

    Thanks again

WELL, I've had the answer to that question since the Windows 98 days.
It's called a Quick Shutdown shortcut, that you can put on your desktop, and just one (or two) clicks and in just a few seconds, you're DOWN, COLD, OFF!!!

Try this: Make a new shortcut on your desktop and use this text in that shortcut:

    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 1

It's best if you can just copy and paste that blue line into a NEW Shortcut on your desktop,
because every space is critical. Then just click that shortcut to fully shut down your PC, and probably faster than you've ever shut it down before.
I've used that or something like it on hundreds of PC's over the years and it's never failed me.
The syntax of the command line has changed since Win-98, but it still works.
What I gave you is good for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Win-10.

    Good Luck,

This "Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate Commands - Add or Remove" link entails removing all commands, I want restart & shut down to remain. Actually I want them all to remain, I was asking how to reverse/eliminate the process once I accidentally clik them. Thank you .

    Hi Techno
I appreciate your shortcut although quick shutdown was not my concern.

You would need to have a password to be considered locked, otherwise it's just a log off.

So it is asking you to create one, and you definitely want to remember it if you want to unlock.
