Removal of system icons from Desktop folder

    Windows 7 Professional - 64bit

I am trying to remove some of the system icons from the Desktop folder. They have already been removed from the desktop, but still remain in the Desktop folder. Please do not tell me how to remove these icons from the desktop - that is not the question being asked!

To remove the icons from the Desktop folder, I've been using regedit. HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Desktop/NameSpace/ contains a variety of entries which are related to various icons in the Desktop folder. For example, {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} is associated with the Libraries icon; deleting this entry will remove this icon from the Desktop folder.

I have gone through these entries and have removed a few more system icons where the registry NameSpace entry was obvious. Those that remain are not so obvious, and I don't want to just go and delete them all.

    My question is:

Does anyone know which of these NameSpace entries are associated with:

    • <user name> (System folder)
    • Control Panel (System folder)
    • Computer (System folder)

    Thanks,
    ali blah blah

    Found answers elsewhere:

Remove the following folders corresponding to each icon:
    • Homegroup : {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} (default item has the value 'Other Users')
    • Network : {F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C} (default item has the value 'Computers and Devices')
    • Libraries : {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} (default item has the value 'UserLibraries')

    A better solution:

...just remove the Desktop shortcut from the Favorites and place a new shortcut there, which points to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop. This one will only show your actual files on the Desktop.
There's something really interesting happening with that shortcut though. If I change the icon of that shortcut to the icon of the original Desktop shortcut, it will behave just like it.
The last sentence is key; if you don't change the icon it will behave like the original Desktop folder and will show those icons. Weird!
