cant load cd-r with photos on

    hi,
got 5 cd-r's with photos on that i cant load. the drive makes clicking noises but never brings up the little window with options on it.
ive tried a few random things ive read online to try and fix it but nothings helped so far. tried finding stuff in the registry but been differnt to mine. and restarting with eject button in until booted up. cleaning the lense ect.
tried updating the driver, but its upto date. and also tried finding problems using windows but nothing.
also gone to the device manager and it says the cd hardware is working correctly

any help or ideas? laptop is old and seen better days but really cant justify buying a new one

Do you have another PC you can try the CD's in? Just to make sure they are still good. Also, any other CD you can try in the drive? That will help to determine if the drive is faulty.

Hi, yes CDs work in another laptop. And I've tried a purchased audio cd in mine and it doesn't do anything. Although it did make the mouse turn into a little cd a few times but that was it

What exactly did you do when you went into the registry. That's a very dangerous place to go if you are not absolutely certain that you know what you are doing! What lens did you clean?

I didn't do anything there. Looked for some keys? That may have needed deleting if there were there but they weren't so I left it all be

Try a "refresh" of the drive. Go to the Device Manager, uninstall the CD drive (Do not uninstall the drivers - the only drivers are the default built in Windows drivers for optical drives). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. If it works, great. However, if it still does not work properly it suggests the drive is defective.

So I've just done that, and once it as all up and running it starting installing the device software and said it completed. But now there is nothing to even click in my computer to do with cd drive. Tried putting disk in and it's clicking and sounds like it try's to spin up but then nothing more.
    I guess it's no good?

Can you remember when you last used the CD drive?

Then I think we must assume that it has died. You might consider an external CD player, not too expensive as here:

Just check first and make sure you have a working USB port!
