We have made that change but it still happens. But we just got word back from Dell about a BIOS update. Looks like we will be trying that out and hoping it will fix the issue.

You say it is all setups here, but in other posts you say you can not get the Test PC's to do it. Which is it?

"This is the option I have for the Display settings. While the screen does go off and turn on with keyboard or mouse interaction because of the timer. If the dimming starts the only thing that can fix it is a reboot. The biggest problem I am having right now is getting it to replicate reliably. Every time we set up a test machine it doesn't happen and there hasn't been a pattern of usage or programs that make it occur."

Check the screen saver is not set to blank the screen after a certain time. The default on a fresh Windows 7 install is to blank the screen after a certain time between 1 and 5 mins. It could also need a username and password to log back on or even ignore the settings and typing on the keyboard or moving the mouse does not restore the video.

When I say it happens in all set ups I am referring to the different combinations of monitor types, video input/output. Not every PC is having it happen as we are finding when we try to watch specific PCs.

We have been able to determine though that only 10% of the machines are getting rebooted during business hours so it is wide spread but not quite every machine as our end users are claiming. Now we just need to find if they repeat themselves daily or if different machines act up.

But the BIOS updated machines haven't had the issue show again yet so that might be the ticket.

Would that be 10% of 10 or perhaps 10% of 100? If it were the BIOS update one would expect every machine to show the symptoms prior to updating?

Is this problem now resolved?

The complaints of it has been replaced with other complaints about other issues not related and we have implemented a daily reboot of all machines as a stop gap. I was thrown a couple of other projects to work on so my teams limited time is focused on those. I am guessing if the daily reboot keeps things to a dull roar it will suffice till I can open up time for a revisit.

I think there is a lot to be said for re booting at frequent intervals. There is a good article here on the subject:
Is it Bad to Shut Down My Computer Regularly or Leave It On All the Time?
You are probably too busy to read it all so I put here a short paragraph on the the pro side of the argument!

Quote:
Fewer temporary system issues - Those who keep their machines booted up indefinitely are familiar with the little problems that crop up when a computer is in use for a long time. Strange little problems occur and they're often solved by a reboot. If you're essentially rebooting every day, you're giving your machine a fresh start. This helps avoid minor system issues.

Thank you for the article. I am firmly in the camp of regular reboots. I have worked help desk in places that had them and not and so many of the silly issue didn't show up in the places that had the reboots. I also have found that having the regular reboots help with automated updates especially with WSUS or GPO.

Looks like we may have had a breakthrough. We were able to finally catch an error in the Event Viewer that was pointing to a problem with Intel's graphics control panel. Investigating that found that the drivers that Dell sent us with the PCs was meant for Win 10. They do have a specific video driver for Win 7 that we were able to get and load on a few PCs. Hopefully we will have positive results to report in the next few days.
