Windows 7 loads only to black screen before login

    Hello all.

I would appreciate greatly any help on this one. I'm trying to avoid a huge bill. Let me give you some background. I had to shut my comp off the hard way after everything froze and I couldn't get to task manager. Now, the thing will only load to the black screen with movable cursor. Just so you know what I've done: Setup shows 4 or 5 SATAs listed but the first 2 say not detected. System Restore didn't work. I tried 3 different points. The startup repair thing didn't seem to work either. I checked the hard drive and it's clearly still spinning, not clicking or anything like that. I'm not sure what else to tell you. Any ideas? Thanks a million.

Hello iansdaddy9 and Welcome to W7F. Hit Control / Alt / Delete at the black screen then click Task Manager. Click File / New Task then type explorer.exe and click OK. This should bring your desktop back. If it still black screens on you, you need to do a little more difficult fix.

Control / Alt / Delete again at the black screen and click Task Manager then click File / New Task and type regedit.exe Travers to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion Then click on the Winlogon folder. Now move over to the right panel and scroll down and find the key called Shell. Make sure that under the "Data" column, it says explorer.exe. If it doesn't then right click on the Shell key and click "Modify". Now change the value to explorer.exe Click OK and exit out on regedit. Let us know how things work out.

Hello. Thanks for replying. I tried the Crl Alt Del thing and it did zero. I'm to the point where I'm going to start over with a new HD and get the data from the other off of it.
