The programs installed on C, where are their User [account] AppData Local, LocalLow, Roaming files located? ProgramData folder located where? Reason for asking: I'm not certain if USB-resident Windows will smoothly interface with C-located programs. And, I'm certain the USB-based Windows has to originate from its home computer; one computer/one Windows/one USB stick. Others will have to weigh in and add their wisdom. I've never tried what you're trying

It's not going to work. When you boot from the USB, that instance of Windows will have its own registry and user profiles. Unless the program is 'portable' by design, you won't be able to run it.

I know two methods you could use:

Method 1: If you can get access to a Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise or Windows 8 Enterprise PC (e.g. Friends PC, Work PC) you can make a Windows to Go stick. You will need a 32gb or larger USB stick or SD card though. I used this method to recover files when my hard drive broke in my laptop.

Method 2: If you dont need to use Windows 7 on your USB stick what you could do is download this software caled Rufus (rufus.akeo.ie) and if you can use Windows XP to do what you want, you can use Rufus to make a Windows XP (or older) Windows to Go USB stick or SD card. I dont know how big your USB stick or SD card would have to be but considering XP, not that big.

Once you have made these SD cards or USB sticks you should be able to open programs on the hard disk. They will probaly run quicker if you copy them to the USB stick.

Running applications that do not belong to the specific Windows installation, in this case that on the USB drive, is problematic.

Some will work without problem, such as portable applications and some others.
Others will run but with problems, be they small or great.
Some will not run at all. Common with large and complex applications.
