Need to turn of auto play

hi all

I am a little unsure where to place this as a topic, thats why it is in the general section.

I am trying to change my group policy setting so that auto run doesn't work. I have to get some data of an external hard drive that is infected.

as i am running Home premium I can't access it. Will this regedit work for windows 7

One quick trick prevents AutoRun attacks

cheers

Why don't you just change it in control panel autorun

I'm not sure if this is exactly the same as you are referring to but open start and type: Auto

Press enter and uncheck the top left box and press the Save button. Should turn off autoplay.

If you have already done it then you shouldn't have to worry, anything else you try to do may actually cause damage to your computer without needing the virus/infections help!

Just my 2 cents though. :|

This one will do.

How to use Group Policy settings to disable all Autorun features in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista

Use either of the following methods:

Method 1
  1. Click Start Collapse this imageExpand this image

, type Gpedit.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Autoplay Policies.
  3. In the Details pane, double-click Turn off Autoplay.
  4. Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
  5. Restart the computer.
Method 2

  3. In the Details pane, double-click Default Behavior for AutoRun.
  4. Click Enabled, and then select Do not execute any autorun commands in the Default Autorun behavior box to disable Autorun on all drives.
  5. Restart the computer.
But what your actually doing via the control panel, is the same as group policy or reg tweak.

Just a lot more trouble for nothing.

Ok I ticked the box at the top of the autorun screen. It seem to have done the trick. I placed a music cd in the drive and it didn't start. i haven't done the reg edit

Can't do the search for gpedit as it doesn't work in home premium i don't have that access

it is a nasty infection (i am getting help on it). hopefully this will work. I have an infected xp vista - seven is now clean - trying to reinstall xp and it is now bsod in the middle of the installation. vista is so infected the computer hasn't been used in months that one can wait and will be the hard as the keyboard doesn't work. The worse thing is no virus scans will find it and it travels through usbs and will burn on to a blank cd when it is inserted in the drive.

Thanks guys for your help.

over it for the day- there is free beer at my local i think i will go drown my sorrows

have a good day
