    Cmd line commands

    Hi there

First post on this forum :)

I have an issue with the command line of Windows 7. Whenever I type in the shutdown command in an elevated console, I simply get a list of available arguments.

    Similar to typing shutdown /?

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Thanks

Hmm...I have never tried to shutdown the computer from the command line before.

    I didn't even know that it's possible.

Hello Semisane, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Normally you have to type shutdown with a switch like shutdown /f or shutdown -f for this. When typing shutdown by itself, it is the same as typing the shutdown /? command.

See top No args item below.

If you would like a shutdown shortcut, you can use the one below if you like.

    Hope this helps,

Hi Semisane and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

This might explain it. As you can see, entering the command without any parameters defaults to showing the help for it.

Exactly what is it you are trying to do?

Just about anything that you can do within the GUI has a command line equivalent. In addition, many command line tools provide far more options than their GUI counterparts.

you should run cmd in administrator mode before using commands like shutdown /s
to turn that off (which i do not recommend), turn of UAC at control panel > useraccounts
