I am surprised at (lack of) speed

Up to now everyone has been marveling at how much quicker 7 is than Vista. I installed the Windows 7 Professional version clean (because it wouldn't let me upgrade Vista Home Premium 64) and then reinstalled most of my programs. What I immediately noticed is slower boot; slower program execution; periodic pauses in operation; and a general feeling I am swimming through molasses. Without overstating the case I do say that Windows 7 is anecdotaly slower than my Vista Home premium was. Enough so that I would take it back and reinstall Vista if my package wasn't opened and unreturnable. Anyone else have a comment.

What did you install? What did you change?

How many unnecessary programs and services do you have running in the background that you don't need?
Check out what can be started manually instead of automatically. Also make sure you have enough ram and your drivers are up to date.

Probably one of your programs that is run at startup is not fully optimized for Win7. Because for me startup and shutdown is faster than Vista. Running programs is about the same for the ones that are compatible.

Your system has a problem and windows7 is not running normally for you at this point.

One problem with win7 is you can have driver issues yet device manager looks normal

When I first installed Windows7 retail on my computer the boot time was around 1:30. After a month or so it's down to 51 seconds. That's a faster boot than I ever got with Vista.

I installed W7 on my netbook and it runs as well as XP did.

With all programs installed and also with everything updated and configured, I get amazingly short startup: from button turn on, through the whole bios startup and up to shown desktop 55sec. That is faster than both vista and xp. I think there is something wrong and you must work your way through deinstallation and reinstall to find the offending program...

I agree. There is certainly something not right with it.

My first suggestion is to wipe the drive, and do a clean install. Install correct up to date drivers. If this problem occurs now, then it is a big problem. If not, start installing your apps. Do a restart after each and every one and make sure you remember the order you installed them in. Keep track of startup and shut down time as well if you want. Keep this up until the problem occurs, or all your apps are installed.

We need to narrow the cause down.

Can you explain what the last statement means?

I assume drivers can be causing instability, yet show no warnings in device manager.
