When I first read your question I was just going to pass it by, because I never had a situation like this before and really do not know the answer, but then I had a thought.
It might not work, but it costs nothing. Right click on your desktop, change the order that the items are sorted and also change the view make it larger or whatever. Then hit refresh. As I said, might not work, but its easy and costs nothing. In any event I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and lots of luck with your new OS.

One thing you could try is to check the actual desktop folders (rather than the desktop itself).
Show hidden and system files and navigate to C:\users\...

and check the contents of the desktop folders for both the user and the public desktop

    Places to check ....

    C:\Users\Public\Desktop
    C:\Users\Default\Desktop
    C:\Users\user\Desktop

something in one of the alternate desktops may need to be deleted or set to hidden
