    Downloading Prevention: Possible ?

    Hello,

    Brand new W7 user.

Have two accounts set up (no passwords); one for me as the Administrator I guess, and one for my son.

The only thing I would like to prevent is his downloading all the movies and videos which he loves to, which really messed up our old PC.

Lots of questionable sites, and incredible amounts of HD memory gone.

So, is there any way to prevent (any) downloads from his side of the PC, but allow him access to anything else for viewing, etc. ?

    Thanks,
    B.

I suppose you could implement some sort of download limit, like limit downloads to 100MB or something.

There should be a program out there that does that.

Try NetPeeker in compatibility mode for XP. Install another browser on your sons account and prevent him from accessing Internet Explorer. And then use NetPeeker to limit the other browsers bandwidth. I'd keep it about 1GB A week as normal browsing and watching videos can exhaust that bandwidth.

NetPeeker is ShareWare, the link is for a 30-day trial.

Oh!Or you could put all the sites he downloads from on the IE7 Block List.

That'll stop him. Oh and both these solutions can easily be bypassed, if your admin account doesn't have a password. Please secure it with one.

    Thanks,

For security reasons, you should set passwords on accounts. If your son is wise at all, he will just log on to yours instead no matter what provisions you put into place on his.

If he knows only a little about computers, he'll still bypass anything you put into place unless it's really good.

If he knows a lot, nothing will stop him from doing anything he wants - technically speaking.

Was thinking the same. As long and the admin account is not password protected, the son can do everything he wants.

    Hello Robert,

In addition, you could setup Parental Controls on his standard account to then filter what he can access via websites.

Parental Controls - Web Filter - Vista Forums

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

if someone knew what they were doing though couldn't you just boot into safe mode and change things around or even delete accounts/change passwords? I did this once on vista sp1

Not if there's a password on the Administrator account. Not normally, anyhow.
