Zidane, civilized means we are kind to each other and don't use fowl language.
Unless you're speaking of birds, it's "foul" language....

That's what happens when you are trying to communicate in a foreign language. This is funny. But thanks - I corrected it.

I have 2 computers using XP, 1 using Vista with the Windows Classic mode. A friend bought a new Compaq with Win7 64 bit. He gave it to me in disgust. I've been fooling with it for a few days now. None of my old software works on it except Office 2003.

I'm having a heck of a time getting around in it. I've always used the Windows Host file to kill Ads. Can't do it in 7, Can't create a Bat file to back up my data. Can't use classic folders. No Mail handler. No Command Prompt available. Had to download WinMail... It's not for me. No CMD prompt. Was told that the Classic Start menu could be set up... Can't as far as I'm concerned. At this time I don't think it runs as fast as XP...

I'll hold off upgrading my other computers for now. I'll be following this forum and looking for positive replies.

    Yes you can.

Can't create a Bat file to back up my data.

    Yes it is.

Just because YOU do not know how to do it, does not mean it cannot be done or that it is not available.

    1) Host file? Use a security suite, that's what you pay for.

    2) Cmd prompt? Still here - type cmd - right click to run as admin or press ctrl+shift+enter.

    3) Bat files? Try backup and restore

    4) No mail? Windows Live Essentials

    5) Speed? Still have 512MB of RAM?

    Get over XP. Its dead.

Vince, give it some time. It is a new system for you and it is understandable that you are a little disoriented. But XP is really, really dead. You have to move on. Given a few weeks, everything will fall in place and you will love it - guaranteed.

I think there will be those who won't accept this until MS stops releasing critical updates for XP..which isn't until 2014. And I'm sure some will then simply go without updates rather than leave XP. I'm sure there are some Windows 2000 users out there still.

I think I understand the problem but hate to encourage the "yesterday guys". See also my last posting here: 2 Reasons why I HATE Windows 7

    Holly Cow People

    Holly Cow People

Windows 7 is the best Microsoft operating system to date I shutter when I hear people still have Windows 98 PC's.

The computing world will not stand still as much as you may want it to but please don't put blame where it does not belong no offense to anyone but to often people try to do things with their PC's they are not qualified to be doing and when it goes wrong they blame the operating system designer or hardware manufacturer etc. etc.

By doing this you cause fear and frustration for other people considering say a new OS but read that so and so had all this trouble and it is because the OS is so bad I remember when XP came out I heard all the same stuff about XP.
