do you have to pay for this?

i've only had OEM copies of windows before, this is my first time with a retail version, so unsure about the support from MS

i think so. I tried it once and it asked me for a credit card when i tried to sign up.
i'll stick with Skype for now.

Retail versions come with time limited phone support, that is what most of the money goes to when you buy a retail version.
