Cant install new gig stick of RAM

I apologize for my stupidity ahead of time.

I am trying to install a new gig stick of RAM. I took out the old 256 stick but cant start windows with the gig stick in the same slot. I've found some places in the device manager that say RAM and was about to delete them hoping it would let me install the new gig stick but I wanted to post this first to get some help from the pros. Im sure this is a simple problem, so how do I fix it so I can put this gig stick to good use!?!?!?

THANKS A LOTS!

Hello RobieSealey and welcome to Sevenforums!

First of all, you should know that there is nothing you should do under Windows in order to install your RAM. It's hardware and its one of those hardware parts that don't need any configuration from the software.

Now, what do you mean you cannot install it? How many RAM slots do you have? How many are occupied already? If you install the new RAM but the computer doesn't start, I suggest you remove every other RAM and keep only the new one and see if the computer starts then.

Also, please check the old RAM and the NEW one. They should have something written on them like PC-5300 , PC-6400 or so... please compare and let us know so we can help you.

You don't need to adjust anything in Windows to install new RAM. What RAM did you buy and what motherboard do you have?

Your 'system specs' say nothing, and it would help greatly if these were there

It's probably not supported by his MoBo I would suspect.
We need the MoBo model and the RAM specs to be sure but many older MB's don't support a Gig per slot.

My old ga-7n400l supports 1gb per slot, but only up to 3gb in total over 4 slots (i just have two filled).
