32 bit to 64? will the Key work?

I recently went to a Microsoft event where I received a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I am wondering if the Key would be good for a 64 bit version.
I would rather have the 64bit, want to download that version and use the Key from the 32bit version. Can it be done?

Probably yes: IF you haven't yet used the key.

And NO if the key has already been used. Although if you use a 64-bit install on the same machine, it should work.

Just a tip: Get in touch with Microsoft and ask about getting 64-bit media. You may need to pay a small fee for transport and such, but at least you know it'll be legit.

Hi rcubed, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Yes. You just have to find a 64-bit version of the same edition and language, in your case Ultimate. One key can always be used in either a 32 or 64 bit versions.

MS is very good at trying to accomodate its customers. If you want to download the 64 bit, this is what I suggest, others have reported success. Install the 64 bit DVD. You will be asked for the key, during the process, just ignore the request, and continue with the install. After you are sure that you like the OS, activate. Based upon the experience of others, you will not be able to activate online. After trying you will be given a phone number to call. You will try to activate with a touch tone phone. If that is not successful a rep will talk to you. Explain the situation, and clearly indicate that you have Win 7 on only one machine. He should at that point activate the system. The only thing that remains to be done at that point is to enjoy the OS.
