i don't have UAC disabled and i can't launch the 'gadgets' menu. The ones i already had open are showing up fine, but i can't add any more once i close them. Is this a bug?

It might be, I had this happen to me once and I know another member had problems like this. I don't change the UAC, A quick reboot got it back to normal for me, I assume you've already ran SFC. A repair install might also fix it, but you might lose your MC gadget like I did.

If anyone else has this happen, this might help (I know it's been a while since the last post, but I just had this problem, and just got it to work again, so it's likely others will still have the problem, too):

When I first started having this problem, it would make at least one of my desktop gadgets not show up. I restarted my laptop, and the one that hadn't shown up before appeared, but a different one wasn't there. I also couldn't open the gadgets menu. This worked for me, and maybe it will work for you, too!

    1. Right-click on your desktop
    2. In the "View" menu, deselect "Show Desktop Gadgets"
    3. When all your gadgets disappear, right-click on your desktop again, go back to the "View" menu, and reselect "Show Desktop Gadgets"
    4. All your gadgets should reappear. Now you can right-click and select "Gadgets", and the menu should open!

As for WHY this happens, I have no clue, but at least this is a temporary fix for me, and hopefully a fix for you, too!
