Desktop icons i drag to desktop work but look ugly

I've looked around, no one else seems to be having this problem.

I created shortcut icons for Word and the icons work fine but look like broken shortcuts. Most ppl suggest right click-properties-change icon. I do that and there are NO different options to choose from. Its a blank box.

This is a pic SIMILAR to my situation. The Opera icon is what I get with my Word 03 and Word 2010 icons. They both looked the way they should BEFORE I clicked on them the first time. But since then, they still work but just look awful.

I have a 32-bit win 7 if that matters. ANY help would be great!

    Thanks!

Turns out that when I did my fresh install of Win 7, it didn't install correctly. I had problems with other things as well like that cool click and drag 2 windows so you can view them side by side...

SO, after all that, I had to reinstall Windows all together. Then, it worked just fine!

The first and second time was it an upgrade or clean install?
