The Acer Aspire 1700 notebook is not supported by Acer for Windows 7, only XP.

You might try the one BIOS upgrade given on the BIOS tab on Support Downloads page for that model: http://gd.panam.acer.com/home/

It says it is for XP but it is from 2008 so it might enable APCI so Windows 7 can be installed.

Confirm that you need the BIOS update by comparing it to the BIOS version given on your first bootup screen or on BIOS setup page. Check for possible APCI setting while in BIOS.

If needed, Download it to the XP desktop and follow instructions to install.
