I would think that you would get that in 7 due to modifying the system files for the taskbar etc

Yes; thank you I thought as much. I'm going to start another thread to ask y'all some questions on another subject. I didn't mean to get into the middle of this one I was just trying to be helpful.

Steven is your Vista OEM or Retail? as we fixed SK's OEM Vista deactivation problem with a retail key.

I didn't have any Vista deactivation probs (my vista is retail) which makes me think that W7 is somehow making some Vista OEM's think that they are retail.

    Mine is an OEM version.

I don't know how relevant it is, but the drive I originally installed the Beta on was a 'primary' partition and not a 'system' partition. My old Vista drive was a 'system' partition and so was my 'Linux' drive which had it's own bootsector. I couldn't actually make my 7 drive bootable by itself without having one or the other 'system' drives connected. According to the 7 installation set up screen anyway.

But there has to be some setting in the boot records that is being tricked into de-activation.

This time I was clever (new system, new HDD) I installed the 7 beta first and then Vista. No activation problems

My Vista is OEM however its also Retail...The BCD store is readonly and the bootstring to keep it permanently activated after first activation cant be changed in this state...I havnt got the deactivation bug yet but Im thinking it is setting this boot-string to false and causing problems for others
