    Why has my icons on the desktop acquired an overlay and how to get rid of it.

    Hello wysiwyg...

    Never seen that one before!
    Does it happen only on the desktop? If so, you might have tweaked desktop.ini.... Did you unhide all files/folders and deleted the 2 desktop.ini files on the desktop?

    Try opening an elevated command prompt and type:

    sfc /scannow

    and let it do its system files check and repair if necessary.

    Post back results.

    Used Ultimate Tweak to replace shortcut arrows, logoff then logon, overlay gone, so use Tweak again to remove arrows, logoff and logon. OK
