How do I use search, have lost a file.

    Win 7 Ultimate RC 7100 64 bit

    Hi,

    I have a document/file called "zarbot".

Yesterday I put it, (I thought ) in to a folder on my PC.

I can not find the zarbot file/document

I have an internal and external HDD, it's possible I may inadvertently stored it anywhere on those two HDDs.

I don't know how to use the search function under "start" properly.

When I type in "zarbot" in the search box under start, it just tells me " no items match your search ".

If I type in a file name I know is on my PC it says the same thing.

It use to be so easy under XP Home, my search doggy would pop up.

What am I doing wrong, how do I find my file?

After you do a search from the start menu click the 'Search again in: computer' button. I belive that will search your whole computer.

    Here is an example.

Just noticed in 'My Computer' if you click computer the search box changes to computer and you can do a whole computer search there too.

    Hi irbeel,

Ah, Thank you very much, I shall play, I just followed your instructions and got a lot further.

I would never have figured it without being shown, thanks.

My next question is how did you get your big red arrows and can they only be applied to screen shots?

I just used MSpaint to add them to my screen shots.

You might find Everything ( free ) is a better option if you want to search for files/folders by name. It is very small and efficient.

    I use it a lot:

    Everything Search Engine

    Thanks SIW2. :)

I installed it this morning, it's very easy to use and fast but it is nice to know how to do it in Win 7.

I think the Win 7 approach is a little convoluted but then so is many things with anything MS.
