    Scans and Defrag Freeze computer!

Whenever I try to do a scan either with McAfee or Windows Defender.. And even disk defrag. it freezes the computer

I hear a noise which i think is from the hard drive.. it sound like.. Tick, tick, tick, tick.

And when it does that I am not able to open any programs and the scan stops. But i am able to move the mouse and open the start menu.

    Any Ideas??

    Hi AceGuy78,

I guess the tick sound from Hard drive is not a good sign maybe over heat or starting to have some internal part faliure. Most of the disk manufacturers have free diagnostic tools at their websites

sounds like your hdd is about to fail. a good way to check is to download Smart monitoring tool, which can check your HDD for errors here: Download S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools from SourceForge.net and follow the instructions in the readme. and if you want to post the results someone here can probably tell you what they mean, but one of the things you should look for are bad or reallocated sectors.

Before taking the time to diagnose the HD, I would be making a backup image (if possible), especially if you have any important data on the drive.
