Windows 7: delay on folder loading

hi all!
i am using w64bit ultimate and i am experiencing the following problem:
i have a "dump" file folder for all my stuff i am temporarily working on, on my desktop. whenever i open the "dump" folder in the explorer it takes forever to load and show me its contents (the green progress bar on top scans through the folder forever). same issue from withing other applications: whenever i try to open a file from the dump folder it takes its time to load. "dump" is part of a library.
clues anyone?

Was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for this particular problem?

In my case, it's my Downloads folder under Favorites that is slow to open. It takes about 45 seconds after I click it, while I watch the green bar scroll across the top to open. This is simply a shortcut to C:\users\profilename\Downloads

This is on my laptop, running 7 Enterprise 32-bit. I checked the indexing options and Users is indexed. For good measure, I deleted the index and rebuilt it, but the same problem persists.

My downloads folder consists of 226 Folders, 1,254 files totaling approx 17.8GB of space.

Strange. My downloads folder opens immediately going down the usual path so i created a download, put that on my desktop and it worked just as fast. You have more in your downloads that i have by a long measure but that should no effect it that much. If you go down the long path, C:/usres/ etc is it still as slow. What i would try might sound a bit crude but may help. I would rename the downlods folder DownloadsX then create a new folder in the same location called Downloads then copy one fifolder from DownloadsX to Downloads and see if the new downloads loads faster. If it does then perhaps we could conclude that it is the high quantity of folders that casuses the delay.
Sorry this is so long but supper is pressing and I haven't time to do a precis.

It's been a while, so I can't describe this just right, but somewhere in the folder properties you can choose settings like "optimize for pictures", "optimize for videos", and "optimize for general items". As I recall, my folders got a lot faster when I set them to "optimize for general items". Don't ask me why.
